Foxconn, a company that trades as Hon Hai Technology Group in China and Taiwan is the world’s leading multinational electronics contract manufacturer whose headquarters are based in Taipei, Taiwan. Established in 1974, the company has recorded steady growth both in size and revenue. In 2021, its annual revenue hit 6.83 trillion Taiwan dollars (USD 214 billion). It was ranked among the top 20 Fortune Global 500 in 2023. All these achievements just show why Foxconn is among the biggest names in the electronics industry.

Brief history
The history of Foxconn dates back to 1974 when the company was founded. Terry Gou founded Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Ltd and it operated as an electrical components manufacturer. The first manufacturing plant was located in Mainland China and was established in Shenzhen.
Foxconn recorded one of its biggest milestones in 2001 when it was selected to manufacture Intel-branded motherboards. In 2007, the company announced plans to build a mega $500 million plant in Huizui, Southern China. By 2012, Foxconn was heavily dominating the electronics market such that it was estimated that 40% of electronics in the global market were from the brand.
The expansion has always been part of the Foxconn. Like most companies in the industry, Foxconn made several acquisitions and mergers. All have largely contributed to its steady growth and expansion as a provider of various electronic solutions.
In 2012, Foxconn acquired a 10 percent stake in Japanese electronics giant Sharp Corporation. The deal included purchasing 50% of Sharp’s LCD plant which was located in Sakai, Japan. In the same year, Foxconn revealed plans to set up five new manufacturing facilities in Brazil, an investment that would generate up to 10,000 job opportunities.
In 2014, Foxconn bought Asia Pacific Telecom, an investment move that made it easier to win spectrum licenses at an auction. These licenses allowed the company to operate 4G telecommunications equipment in Taiwan.
In 2016, Foxconn finally bought 66% of Sharp’s voting stock. In the same year, the company partnered with Tencent and Harmony New Energy Auto to found Future Mobility, an automotive startup that aimed at selling all-electric autonomous vehicles by 2020.
In 2019, Foxconn was ranked 25th among the Forbes Top 100 Digital Companies. In the same year, the company established a new strategic goal that was geared at focusing on electric vehicles, robotics, and digital health industries. The company also announced a total commitment to the fields of artificial intelligence, semiconductor technology, and next-generation communication technologies. All these fields were expected to define the next phase of the company’s growth.
In 2021, Foxconn announced that it was putting more focus on the semiconductor production field. Given the developing trends and events on the global scene, Foxconn would focus on semiconductor chips for health technology and electric vehicles. To achieve this goal, the company entered into a partnership with Xsemi Corporation to expand its semiconductor production capacity.
In 2022, Foxconn partnered with Iverdanta Limited, India’s multinational group to start manufacturing semiconductor chips in India. However, Foxconn dropped out of this deal. In the same year, Foxconn acquired arWQana Technologies, a wireless technology company. It also partnered with an IC designing company AchernakTek, a move that made it possible for Foxconn to extend its aggressiveness in designing and developing semiconductor chips for the automotive industry. The company also got into developing semiconductor chips for 5G infrastructure.
Still in 2022, the automotive division of Foxconn partnered with Luxugen to launch the first full electric vehicleLuxgen n7.
