Freescale Semiconductors Inc. was an American Semiconductor manufacturer that had built quite a big name in the IC industry. The company was created by the divestiture of the Semiconductor division of Motorola in 2004. The company specializes o semiconductor chips for automotive, embedded systems, and telecommunication industries.

Freescale Semiconductor Ltd was known for providing embedded processing semiconductor chips. These products included microcontrollers, digital signal processors, and application processors.

 Freescale Semiconductor Inc. was acquired by a private investor in 2006 before it was eventually merged into NXP Semiconductors in 2015. But before all these mergers and acquisitions, the company had already established a strong foundation that would oversee its dominance in the industry.

Freescale’s quick rise to prominence is highly attributed to the quality and reliability of its semiconductor chips. Since it was founded the company has proven its total dedication to producing high-grade semiconductor chips that exceed the expectations of their customers.

 Is NXP the same as Freescale? 

 Most people tend to confuse the operations between these two business names. As we have already mentioned,  NXP  acquired  Freescale in a deal that was finalized on December 7, 2015.  The Merger meant that Freescale would now operate as  NXP Semiconductors. Otherwise, before the merger, the two were completely two separate business entities.

 NXP, on the other hand, stands for “ Next Experience.” Initially, the company was known as Philips Semiconductor, and the name change was made after the acquisition by a group of private investors. Since it is a Dutch company, its headquarters are in Eindhoven, Netherlands. However, it has numerous distribution centers in different locations around the world.

The key point is if you are looking for Freescale semiconductors and it seems they are not available, then you use the NXP Semiconductor name. Chances are you will find the exact product that was under Freescale.

 Brief  history of Freescale Semiconductor

 History was created out of a divestiture from Motorola. In 2003, Motorola announced that they would divest their semiconductor division and would give it a temporary name SPS SpinCo. By the end of 2004, Freescale had completed its separation from Motorola.  This means that it was now free to pursue its expansion goals as an independent entity. It would experience minimum interference from its parent company.

 In 2006, Freescale accepted a $17.6 buyout offer from Blackstone Group.  The deal was finalized in December and is recorded to be among the largest buyouts that the company had ever recorded.

 From those early years,  Freescale Semiconductor experienced steady growth and also expanded its production as well as the market. It had its second IPO in 2011

 While Freescale Semiconductor was a manufacturer of semiconductor chips, it mainly specialized in mixed-signal ICs. The company offers both analog and mixed-signal ICs that are used in different application areas.

Analog and mixed-signal semiconductors from the brand are ideal for automotive, and communication application areas. They feature high power, and great performance, and are of compact sizes. The company also offers customized designs for these semiconductor products. This means that as a buyer, you can get semiconductor chips that have been curated for your application.

Here are some of the products that the  company offers  under the  umbrella of analog and mixed-signal semiconductors:

· Analog front-end: This class encompasses high-precision measurement products that are used for making programmable logic controllers. These products include I/O modules, data loggers, instrumentation, high-precision sensors, and other data collection devices.

NXP Acquires Freescale Semiconductor

 In 2015, NXP   and Freescale announced that they were going to merge their business in which Freescale Semiconductor would operate as NXP Semiconductors The deal was estimated to be worth 40 billion. Through this merger, NXP aimed to be the leader of the mixed signal semiconductor industry.

 Given that the demand for this family of semiconductors was growing at a fast rate, NXP thought it was time to take advantage and this merger came at the right time. Mixed-signal semiconductor chips were increasingly becoming vital in the fields of automotive, connectivity, and security.

 Since the merger was between two successful companies, it was easy for them to take their business to the next level without introducing any drastic changes.  It was also easier for the companies to accelerate the strategic plans that the two companies had already put in place.
