 According to the technical documents, Cypress thought that the acquisition would reduce its overdependence on highly cyclical memory modules. The fact that both companies were manufacturing timers means that the merging will have minimum interruptions on the business process.

Cypress Corp specializes in high-precision clocks while ICW specializes in manufacturing timer ICs for PCs and other relevant electronic devices. A combination of the two would result in a giant company that manufactures a wide range of products. This acquisition also resulted in an improved financial position for Cypress Corp.

  In this acquisition, it was agreed  that Cypress will acquire all the outstanding  stock options from IC Works at $13.7 million

Broad product portfolio

 One sure thing about merging Cypress and IC Works is an expanded product portfolio. The company increased the range of semiconductor products that it supplied. It also acquired full capabilities to serve a wider market with more electronics.

 The most notable improvement was in the timing technology. This was because IC Works was specializing in system timing generation ICs.  Cypress became one of the major distributors of timing ICs.

Beyond product manufacturing, Cypress also retained the research division and IC design of the IC Works.  This was a major boost to the company’s growing portfolio.

 Investment in data and telecommunication

 Cypress Semiconductor has significantly invested in the data and telecommunication industries. Acquiring companies that were good in datacom was one of the most effective ways in which Cypress entered into this field.  For instance, Cypress Semiconductor acquired Arcus Technology in a $20 million cash and stock deal.

Arcus was an electronics company that specialized in different telecommunication products such as  PDH multiplexers, switching technology, internet protocol, and mappers. The company also owned several IPs for the datacom and telecom industries. 

Through the acquisition, Cypress was able to expand its product portfolio with a set of new products that are relevant in the datacom and telecom industries. The company also became a big player in the fast-growing WAN and WAN-access bandwidth.

Cypress mergers with Infineon

 In April 2020, Infineon Technologies AG completed the acquisition of Cypress Semiconductor Corp. This means that the San Jose-based company officially became part of  Infineon. In this deal, Infineon aimed to expand its product portfolio and expand its market to other application areas. The company’s executives strongly believed that the move to acquire Cypress would speed up its path of profitable growth.

At the time of acquisition, Cypress had a good footing in the U.S. and Asia. Also, the company had properly invested in research and development of semiconductor technologies. The acquisition would made it easier for Infineon to focus on the emerging technologies in the semiconductor industry.
